PHOTO EDiTiNG and RESTORATiON

I always find photo editing to be a tremendously satisfying activity – seeing an image come together or looking refreshed really seems to sum up all my skills as an artist – as if the true aim were to leave no evidence of having been there at all – so the image can speak for itself.

Of course, everyone has their own idea of what makes something work or not but then, the beauty of image editing, is in its infinite possibilities.

So here’s just a few examples to illustrate – from a ‘less is more’ approach, where I simply removed some age spots….

…to a more in-depth restoration requiring various level adjustment to ‘rediscover’ some details as well as cleaning up minor defects…

Mary Doughty's Family BEFORE & AFTER

…and finally, on to a full-scale illustration, bringing together a range of original elements to create a whole new ‘truth’.

To clarify though, any photo manipulation I do is done digitally from scans, photos or copies of originals. I cannot literally ‘restore’ old photographs – but hopefully, I can give them a new life.
