This was the first design I came up with for South Pacific. I don’t usually consider myself to be an illustrator so I was particularly proud of how well this turned out. I set out to capture the fun and light-hearted part of the show where the characters put on a holiday revue titled “Thanksgiving Follies” in which one of the female nurses performs a comedy burlesque dressed as a sailor.
In the end, the director wanted to focus on the more ominous military aspects of the show which is why we went with the stronger, metal-plated porthole concept ‘surrounding’ the tropical view in the final design. But I still feel this was one of my most successful designs so that’s why I wanted to show it off here.
